The Order Nectiopoda is a group of crustaceans within the class Branchiopoda, commonly known as the "swimming fairy shrimp" and related species. Members are primarily small, freshwater organisms adapted for swimming in temporary ponds, lakes, and pools. They have flattened, leaf-like appendages used for both locomotion and filter-feeding on microscopic plankton and detritus. Nectiopods exhibit simple body segmentation, compound eyes, and an open circulatory system, and many produce resting eggs that can survive dry periods, allowing them to persist in ephemeral habitats. They play an important ecological role in aquatic food webs, serving as prey for fish and other invertebrates while helping recycle nutrients.
