The Order Notostraca comprises small, primitive crustaceans commonly known as tadpole shrimp. They are characterized by a broad, flattened carapace covering the head and thorax, a long segmented abdomen, and a pair of compound eyes. Notostracans are omnivorous scavengers, feeding on detritus, algae, and small invertebrates, and are typically found in temporary freshwater pools. They have remarkable adaptations for surviving harsh, ephemeral environments, including the ability to produce drought-resistant eggs that can remain dormant for years. As living fossils, Notostraca provide valuable insight into the early evolution of branchiopod crustaceans.
