The Class Chilopoda comprises centipedes, elongated, segmented arthropods with one pair of legs per body segment. They are predatory, using venomous forcipules (modified front legs) to capture and paralyze prey. Chilopods have a flattened body, well-developed antennae, and simple eyes, allowing them to be fast and agile hunters. Found in soil, leaf litter, under stones, and logs worldwide, they play a role in controlling insect populations. Most are nocturnal and avoid light, favoring moist environments.
