Habitat:
This species occurs in montane-forested areas, and during the non-breeding season can be found dispersed in the forest and in streams. It is one of only a few species of the genus Bufo that is a lotic breeder, and the only one in Japan (Matsui and Maeda 2018). It is an explosive breeder, with the breeding season only lasting a couple of weeks in early to mid-April when strings of eggs are laid in the pools along the edges of streams (Tsuji and Kawamichi 1996, Matsui 1976). The tadpoles are adapted to flowing water and metamorphose between July and September (Iwasawa and Saito 1989).

Range:
This species inhabits the mountainous areas of the Chibu and Kinki regions of central Honshu, Japan, occurring at elevations ranging from 50-1,690 m asl (Matsui 1988).

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
Its range includes several protected areas.

Research Needed
The degree of natural hybridization with Bufo japonicus formosus in relation to habitat changes needs to be investigated.
