Habitat:
In Bolivia, this species lives in dry forest in Andean valleys, and has been found in very disturbed areas. In Argentina, it occurs in montane cloud forests. It can tolerate habitat disturbance and can be found in clearings on slopes as well as roadside ditches and pastures, but cannot tolerate more intensive habitat modification such as intensive logging. It is a diurnal and terrestrial species, and an opportunistic, extremely explosive breeder. It breeds in shallow ephemeral ponds and also in roadside ditches, and lays its eggs in the water where the tadpoles then also develop. Males call during the day and sometimes night from the water's edge or from within the water.

The breeding activity of this species has been found to be opportunistic throughout a prolonged spring-summer breeding season. The onset and extent of breeding activity is directly influenced by rainfall. Spawning activity follows a pattern of two three-day peaks mostly related to heavy rainfall events. Annual patterns of arrival and length of residence of adults appears to be heavily influenced by the extent of the rainy season (Vaira 2005).

Range:
This species occurs in the Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Santa Cruz and Tarija departments in Bolivia. In Argentina, the species occurs in Salta and Jujuy provinces. Its elevational range is from 700–2,100 m asl. This is probably a species complex (Clemente-Carvalho et al. 2017).

Conservation:
Conservation Actions
It occurs in Reserva de Fauna y Flora Tariquía, Parque Nacional Iñao, Rio Grande Department Park in Bolivia. In Argentina, it occurs in Parques Nacionales Baritú y Calilegua, Reserva Nacional Nogalar de los Toldos, Parque Provincial Potrero de Yala and Reserva Ecológica Serranías del Zapla.

Research Needed
More taxonomic work is needed to determine whether this is a species complex. Increased sampling is needed from the middle part of the Argentinean distribution and from the Bolivian portion of the species' range (Clemente-Carvalho et al. 2017). More information is needed on this species' population size, distribution, and trends.
