Habitat:
The species inhabits a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, natural and artificial including still and slow-running water bodies in open or wooded (coniferous and broadleaf) areas and macchia; it also occurs in springs and may even occur in slightly brackish pools. The species can tolerate some habitat disturbance.
Eggs are deposited in stream pools, forest floor puddles, coastal marshes, wet meadows, drainage ditches, reservoirs, and garden ponds among others, and the larvae develop in streams.

Range:
The species is mainly restricted (Gasc et al. 1997, Arnold 2003) to the islands of Sardinia (Italy) and Corsica (France, where it is absent from the high mountains in the centre of the island; Salvidio and Delaugerre 2012, Corti et al. 2022), with other subpopulations occurring on a number of smaller Mediterranean islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Biaggini et al. 2015) including Caprera, La Maddalena, Spargi, San Pietro and Asinara, Montecristo and Giglio islands, Monte Argentario (fossil island), and also the islands of Port-Cros and Levant in the south of France (Port-Cros National Park; Deso et al. 2019, Duguet et al. 2019). The species was introduced into one locality of continental France (Bouches-du-Rhône Department, Provence) from Corsica (R. Duguet pers. comm. March 2020; not mapped). It has been recorded at elevations from sea level up to 1,770 m asl (Sardinia).
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
The species is listed on Appendix II of the Berne Convention, and on Annex IV of the EU Natural Habitats Directive. It is protected by national legislation in Italy and was listed as Vulnerable (B2ab(iii)) on the Italian National Red List (Rondinini et al. 2022). The species was assessed as Least Concern for France (UICN France et al. 2015).
The species has been recorded from 47 Natura 2000 sites across its range (BISE 2024). These include Parc o Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano (Giglio and Montecristo islands, where the latter is an integral natural reserve), Parco Nationale del’Arcipelago di La Maddalena and Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargentu-Parco Regionale dei Sette Fratelli-Monte Genis, and in Port-Cros National Park in France.
Conservation Needed
Better protection of existing suitable of aquatic habitats and continuous monitoring of population and habitat trends, and disease risk.
Research Needed
Further investigations into the genetic diversity of this species are needed.
