Habitat:
This species occurs in the dry and wet Chaco. It breeds in temporary and artificial ponds. During the dry season individuals burrow into humid soil underground, produce a cocoon of dead skin, and wait for rains before emerging again (Faivovich et al. 2014). Its adaptation to anthropogenic disturbance is not known.

Range:
This species is known from northern, central and eastern areas of Chacoan environments: Argentina (provinces of Chaco, Santa Fe, Salta, and Formosa); Bolivia (departments of Santa Cruz and Tarija); and Paraguay (departments of Presidente Hayes, Boquerón, and Alto Paraguay). In Paraguay, the majority of known records are located in the Chaco Seco (Brusquetti and Lavilla 2006, Weiler et al. 2013, Brusquetti et al. 2018). Records from Corrientes are thought to be in error, and possibly belong to L. asper (J. Faivovich pers. comm. October 2018). The record from Porto Murtinho, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil originally identified as L. asper (Sugai et al. 2013) actually belongs to this species, as corroborated by photographs of specimens and molecular data by Brusquetti et al. (2018). Its elevational range is from 0–200 m asl.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
It occurs in several protected areas. In Bolivia, it is present in Reserva Privada Corbalan, Area Protegida Municipal Indigena Ñembiguazu, and Parque Nacional Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco (Bolivia Red List Assessment Workshop September 2019). In Paraguay, this species occurs in Parque Nacional Defensores del Chaco and Reserva Natural Cañada del Carmen (F. Brusquetti pers. comm. December 2020).

Conservation Needed
Continued and strengthened management of the National System of Protected Areas in Paraguay (SINASIP) is needed (F. Brusquetti pers. comm. December 2020).

Research needed
Monitoring of the population to understand effects of fires, habitat transformation and specimen collection on this species is needed. The development of an Amphibian Conservation Action Plan in Paraguay is required (F. Brusquetti pers. comm. December 2020).

In Brazil, this species needs more information about population size, distribution, trends, life history, ecology and threats (Brazilian Red List Assessment Workshop 2021).
