During the daytime, it lives in the moist environment of soil caves, mud caves and plant roots on the shore (Fei et al. 2012). A description of its advertisement call is in Fei et al. (2012). It breeds from the end of May to June, eggs are laid on the bottom of stones, and each female toad lays 130-164 eggs (Fei et al. 2012). Tadpoles live in small streams or under slow-flowing stones, in small numbers (Fei et al. 2012).
Range:
This species is only known from three locations in Emei, Hongya County and Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province, south-western China, between 2,500-3,400 m asl (F. Xie pers. comm. June 2019). It occurs in fewer than 10 threat-defined locations, and its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 6,810 km2.
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
Three protected areas are present within the range of this species, namely Wolong Nature Reserve, Emeishan Natural and Historical Heritage Reserve, and Wawushan National Forest Park.
Conservation Needed
Improved habitat management and protection is required, as is public outreach to reduce salamander harvesting in this region (F. Xie pers. comm. June 2019).
Research Needed
Further research on its population is required.
