This species inhabits small to medium sized low-gradient streams, seepages and spring-fed marshes in sub-alpine and alpine areas. The surrounding habitats may include cultivated fields, forests, shrublands, grasslands and/or only sparse vegetation. This species breeds by larval development in freshwater. During the breeding season, which lasts from June-August, eggs are deposited on the undersides of rocks within the streams (Fei et al. 2012).

This species is endemic to China, and is known from the Provinces of eastern Xizang (in the counties of Baxoi, Qamdo, Jomda, Markam, Riwoqe, and Zayu), southeastern Qinghai (in Baima, Nangqen, and Yushu counties), western Sichuan (in Dege, Baitang, Kangding, and Luhuo counties) and northwestern Yunnan (in Deqen County). It has been recorded between 2,600–4,200 m asl. Following the synonymy with Scutiger ruginosus, it is now known from Kangding and Muli in western Sichuan Province, China, at c. 3,400 m asl (Ye et al. 1993).
