Habitat:
The burrowing habits of this species generally restrict its distribution to areas with sandy or soft soils. It occurs in dunes, oak or pine forests, scrub, cultivated land, alluvial terraces and open areas, sometimes close to human habitation. In France it is largely restricted to coastal regions and continental floodplains. It breeds in temporary ponds, livestock ponds, and marshes, with a good vegetation cover, that occasionally may be slightly brackish (Thirion 2006, 2014), and occasionally in intermittent streams or oxbows. The larval development is completed in five to six months, requiring temporary ponds with long hydro-period for successful reproduction, which makes it vulnerable to introduced predators and desiccation of ponds.

The species seems to be very sedentary, resulting in marked genetic structure at low spatial scales. They can live for over 10 years (Talavera 1990), and their generation length is thought to be seven years (I. Martinez-Solano pers. comm. June 2020).

Range:
This species occurs across most of the Iberian Peninsula except the northern area of the peninsula and parts of central and northern Portugal, and extends to the Atlantic coast of western France and the Mediterranean coast of southern France. There are also isolated subpopulations on three Atlantic islands: Oléron, Ré and Noirmoutier (Thirion 2002a). It occurs from sea level (France and Spain) up to 1,770 m asl (Spain).

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species occurs in a number of protected areas, including several NATURA 2000 sites, and is listed on Appendix II of the Bern Convention and on Annex IV of the EU Natural Habitats Directive. It is protected by national legislation in Spain, and is listed in a number of national and sub-national Red Data Books. In France, the creation of new ponds or replacement on destroyed ones has worked well to maintain and increase suitable breeding habitats (P.A. Crochet pers. comm. 2022)

Conservation Needed
Improved habitat protection is required. The creation of new ponds and replacement of destroyed ones is needed throughout the species' range.

Research Needed
Population monitoring is required.
