Habitat:
This species occurs in forests along montane rivers. The breeding season is relatively long, lasting three months during April to August. Males form a territory on rocks in the stream and call all day. Females lay eggs under rocks and stones in a cluster of 200–600. Larvae have a large oral disc to adapt to streams in which they develop.
Range:
This species is endemic to Japan, where it is widely distributed in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu including the Goto Islands. It has an elevational range from sea level up to 1,600 m asl.
