Habitat:
This species is found in tropical lowland forest and along the edges of clearings. It inhabits pasture and tropical rainforests at Los Tuxtlas being more abundant at forest edges (Urbina-Cardona et al. 2006, 2012), and can also survive in well-shaded plantations. It has also been found in banana plants in a village in Chiapas, suggesting that the species is somewhat adaptable to the opening up of its habitat, however, the survival of the species is likely dependent on the presence of forest (S. Rovito pers. comm. October 2019). It breeds by direct development and is not dependent on water.

Range:
This species occurs in two general areas in Mexico; the Los Tuxtlas area of southern Veracruz, and the Los Chimalapas area of extreme eastern Oaxaca to the Caribbean slopes of western and central Chiapas where it generally lives below 1,000 m asl. It could occur between known sites but further field surveys are required to verify this (P.A. Caballero pers. comm. July 2016). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 19,838 km2.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species occurs in the Los Tuxtlas National Park and the El Ocote Biosphere Reserve.

Conservation Actions Needed
Ongoing and improved enforcement of habitat protection within the existing protected areas is needed.

Research Needed
Further work is required to better understand the population size, distribution and trends.
