This species is known from north-eastern Departamento San Martin, Peru, from three localities: (1) Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area; (2) Shucshuyacu; and (3) Chimbirillo at Cordillera Azul National Park (Cusi et al. 2020). The disjunct distribution of the species includes the lower basin of the Mayo River, the basin of the Sisa River and the basin of the Chambira River, on both sides of the Huallaga River. It might be present at similar elevations within Cordillera Azul National Park and Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area, but is unlikely to occur much more widely (R. von May pers. comm. 2022). It occurs at elevations ranging from 485 to 1,311 m asl. The extent of occurrence (EOO) of its known distribution is 3,747 km2, which represents five or fewer threat-defined locations.
This species has been recorded in Cordillera Azul National Park, which is a well-managed protected area. It has also been found in Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area.
Conservation Needed
Expansion of effective forest preservation and continued management of existing protected areas are necessary for the conservation of this species.
Research Needed
Further work is required on its distribution, population status, and natural history.
