Habitat:
This species occurs in montane tropical rainforest. It is considered unlikely to be tolerant of much habitat degradation, and is presumed to breed by direct development.

Range:
This species occurs near the summit of Cerro Peña Blanca, in the Cordillera Central of central Panama, at 1,315 m asl. Given that this is the highest mountain in Parque Nacional General de Division Omar Torrijos Herrera and many neotropical salamander species are known to have very narrow elevational ranges, it is possible that this species has a very restricted range. Increased sampling in the area suggests that it is unlikely to occur more widely (Panama Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019). Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is 0.5 km2 measured by a minimum convex polygon of its known range and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 4 km2; however, the EOO has been adjusted to 4 km2 as AOO values should not exceed EOO (IUCN Standards and Petitions Subcommittee 2019).

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
The type locality of this species occurs within Parque Nacional General de División Omar Torrijos Herrera.

Conservation Needed
Improved management and enforcement of the boundaries of Parque Nacional General de División Omar Torrijos Herrera is needed to prevent illegal activities from taking place within the park (Panama Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019). Proactive, precautionary steps should be taken to detect the arrival of Bsal in Panama and to establish a baseline by including the swabbing of salamanders encountered during routine amphibian monitoring activities in this country (Panama Red List Assessment Workshop 2019).

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats.
