Habitat:
This species inhabits coniferous, oak and cloud forests and is often associated with limestone outcrops. It is a crevice-dweller species that is frequently found beneath flakes of rock on ledges, or under the bark of logs on the ground and less frequently in arboreal bromeliads. It can persist in degraded habitats, although it is unknown whether it will persist in habitats that are completely open (P.A. Caballero pers. comm. July 2016). It breeds by direct development so is not dependent upon water.

Range:
This species has been restricted to north-central Chiapas, México, between 1,200–2,800 m asl. It has been recorded from the vicinity of San Cristobal de las Casas (Wake and Brame 1969, S. Rovito pers. comm. August 2019), San Juan Chamula (T.J. Papenfuss pers. obs. 1984, S. Rovito pers. comm. August 2019), Julian Grajales, Tapalapa (S. Rovito pers. comm. August 2019), Ya'altzemen, in Municipio Chilon (E. Gustavo Ruano and T.J. Papenfuss pers. obs. 2007), and San Francisco Jimbal (S. Rovito, S. Bouzid, J. Sanchez Solis pers obs. 2012). Following morphological examination, previous subpopulations from Cordillera de los Cuchumatanes in Guatemala have now been assigned to Bolitoglossa xibalba (Campbell et al. 2010). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 10,901 km2.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions
This species occurs in the Reserva Ecológica Huitepec run by Pronatura near San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico.

Conservation Needed
Broad habitat conservation and management is needed in order to prevent further habitat disturbance and degradation from occurring within the species range.

Research Needed
Further research into its populations size and trends is required, and monitoring of the population status of this species is needed
