Habitat:
This arboreal salamander lives in subtropical moist forest, pine and pine-oak forests, as well as in shaded coffee and banana plantations, but probably cannot tolerate open areas. It breeds by direct development and is not dependent upon water.
Range:
This species occurs in northern Chiapas to the Sierra Madre del Sur, Mexico, and Cerro Baul in Guatemala, between 10-1,600 m asl. Additional records have been reported from northwest Chiapas, Mexico, extending the elevational range to 1,880 m asl (S. Rovito pers. comm. August 2019).
An isolated subpopulation at Barranca de Trincheras (on the edge of the Montesillos Biological Reserve), Comayagua, in south-central Honduras was previously reported in the 2004 assessment, although it was doubtful that it still occurred at the locality (the only known specimen from this site was collected in 1951). It is no longer considered to occur in Honduras as records have been tentatively reassigned to Bolitoglossa nympha (Hess et al. 2017).

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species occurs in La Sepultura and El Triunfo Biosphere Reserves in Mexico, but not in any protected areas in Guatemala. It is protected by the Mexican Government under the category of special protection (Pr).
Conservation Needed
Proactive, precautionary steps should be taken to detect the arrival of Bsal in Guatemala and/or Mexico and to establish a baseline by including the swabbing of salamanders encountered during routine amphibian monitoring activities in the country (Guatemala and Mexico Red List Assessment Workshops 2019).
Research Needed
Further research is needed to determine the impact of chytridiomycosis on this species.
