Habitat:
This species occurs in humid hardwood or pine-oak forests (Campbell et al. 2010). Individuals were found in bromeliads (2–10 m above the ground) growing on pines or hardwood trees and on the ground beneath rotting logs, or deep in crevices along dirt banks, during both, the rainy and dry seasons (Campbell et al. 2010). It is unlikely to tolerate anthropogenic habitat disturbance; however, this species occurs on an active volcano and apparently is tolerant of some level of natural disturbance (Guatemala Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019). This species lays eggs that undergo direct development (J.A. Campbell pers. comm. October 2011).

Range:
This species is known from the western slope of Volcán de Pacaya, near San Vicente Pacaya, Departamento Escuintla, from near Aldea del Cedro in Departamento Escuintla, from San Jorge Muxbal and from near San José Pinula in Departamento Guatemala, Guatemala (Campbell et al. 2010). It occurs at elevations between 1,700 and 2,300 m asl.

Further survey efforts in neighbouring highlands were unsuccessful in recording any other individual of this species (J.A. Campbell pers. comm. August 2019). It is believed to be restricted to the highland region delimited by Volcán Pacaya in the south and the Las Nubes Block in the north, but it might occur in remaining forest patches in between known localities (J.A. Campbell pers. comm. August 2019). Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is 661 km2.

Conservation:

Conservation Actions In-Place
Volcán de Pacaya has several protected areas across this species' distribution range, although they seem to not be well enforced as this species' habitat continues to disappear rapidly (J.A. Campbell pers. comm. October 2011, August 2019).

Conservation Needed
Improved enforcement and management of protected areas will be important for maintaining critical forest habitat within the species' range.

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' population status and life history.
