Habitat:
This species is an inhabitant of tropical deciduous forest, in a dry valley with a limestone substrate. It has also been recorded in humid montane rainforest in Guatemala (Guatemala Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019). It breeds by direct development.

Range:
This species is found in the interior valley of southern Chiapas, Mexico, and extends into extreme western Guatemala. It has also been recorded from Municipio de Las Margaritas, near Nueva Aurora in Chiapas, Mexico, extending the range of this species 23 km north of the nearest vouchered locality (Clause et al. 2016). Its elevational range is 1,200-2,000 m asl. Its unlikely to occur more widely in the Guatemalan part of its range (J. Campbell pers. comm. August 2019). Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is 9,075 km2, which represents 5-10 threat defined locations.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions
This species is found in the Lagunas de Montebello Nature Reserve, Mexico, on the border with Guatemala. It has not been recorded in any protected areas in Guatemala. It is listed as "Threatened" (Amenazada) by the Mexican government.

Conservation Needed
Additional site protection, including habitat restoration actions, might be beneficial for this species. Proactive, precautionary steps should be taken to detect the arrival of Bsal in Mexico and Guatemala through the swabbing of both wild and imported salamanders, in addition to a total ban on the importation of non-native salamanders (Guatemala and Mexico Red List Assessment Workshops 2019).

Research Needed
Research is needed on its taxonomic relationships, its population size and distribution, and natural history. There is also a need for fieldwork to determine the current population status of this species.
