Habitat:
This species occurs in montane secondary forest. Individuals are found under the leaf litter during the day and are active in the evening from 18:00-22:00 h, where they occur on ferns, bromeliads, low vegetation, and on mossy rocks (Acevedo et al. 2013a, Barrio-Amorós et al. 2015). During the day they are in resting position, bending their body, usually under leaf litter, rocks or between thick roots (Acevedo et al. 2014). The subpopulation at Los Remansos is associated with a stream with individuals usually inhabiting riparian vegetation, while the other Colombian subpopulation at La Asiria occurs in an isolated forest patch with no flowing water (Acevedo et al. 2013a). It is presumed to breed by direct development.
Range:
This species is currently only known from four localities in the high Andean forests; two in the eastern flank of the Cordillera Oriental (La Asiria de Belén, within the Parque Nacional Natural Tamá and Los Remansos in the buffer zone of PNN Tamá) municipality of Toledo, Departamento de Norte de Santander, Colombia, and two directly across the border in Venezuela near Matamula, between Bramón and Delicias and Río Chiquito. In Colombia it occurs between 2,000–2,700 m asl (Acevedo et al. 2013a) and in Venezuela between 2,000–2,020 m asl (Barrio-Amorós et al. 2015). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 425 km2 and there are four or fewer threat-defined locations.
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species occurs within Parque Nacional Natural Tamá. Educational activities and active participation of local communities through seminars and workshops open the possibilities to develop a management plan for threatened habitats of PNN Tamá, with the aim of increasing the programmes for long-term restoration of forests to ensure the survival of amphibian species that live in these habitats (Acevedo et al. 2013b).
Conservation Needed
Improved habitat protection is required at sites where this species is known to occur.
Research Needed
There is an urgent need to discover more about the population dynamics of this species and monitor its population status. The effects of Bd on the population should also be investigated.
