Habitat:
This species inhabits broadleaf cloud forest habitat. Individuals have been collected from under and inside rotten logs, under bark, and inside a fallen bromeliad, and one specimen was collected from 2 m above the ground. The prehensile tail of this species suggests it could be highly arboreal (Vásquez-Almazán and Rovito 2014). It is expected to breed by direct development, as with its congeners.

Range:
This species is known from the highlands of the Departamento Baja Verapaz, in the vicinity of Purulhá and Chilascó, as well as from the southern slopes and crest of the Sierra de las Minas in the Departamento El Progreso and Zacapa. It occupies an elevational range of 1,585–2,835 m asl (Vásquez-Almazán and Rovito 2014, S. Rovito and C. Vásquez-Almazán pers. comm. August 2019). It is likely to be restricted to the vicinity of known sites (C. Vásquez-Almazán pers. comm. August 2019). Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is 1,200 km2.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species is known to occur within Sierra de las Minas Biosphere Reserve and near the Biotopo del Quetzal.

Conservation Needed
Proactive, precautionary steps should be taken to detect the arrival of Bsal in Guatemala and to establish a baseline by including the swabbing of salamanders encountered during routine amphibian monitoring activities in the country (Guatemala Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019).

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats.
