Habitat:
This species inhabits cloud forest containing a mixture of large broadleaf and pine trees, as well as tree ferns. Vegetation in these forests is dense, and trees are covered in epiphytes and mosses. Individuals were collected from inside arboreal bromeliads (Rovito et al. 2010). It is likely to be sensitive to habitat disturbance (C. Vásquez-Almazán pers. comm. August 2019). It presumably breeds by direct development as with other species in the genus.

Range:
This species is known only from the vicinity of the type locality on the Finca Planada de Margot in Municipio Rio Hondo of the Sierra de las Minas in the Departamento de Zacapa, Guatemala. It occupies an elevational range of 1,600–1,750 m asl. Its current known extent of occurrence (EOO) is 10 km2, however it is expected to occur more widely throughout the southern slope of the Sierra de las Minas (Rovito et al. 2010) and may have an EOO of up to 65 km2 based on its potential distribution.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species occurs in a private reserve, that is currently well-protected (C. Vásquez-Almazán and G. Ruano-Fajardo pers. comm. August 2019).

Conservation Needed
Continued management of protected area(s) where this species occurs, and expanded protection of cloud forest elsewhere in its range is needed. Proactive, precautionary steps should be taken to detect the arrival of Bsal in Guatemala and to establish a baseline by including the swabbing of salamanders encountered during routine amphibian monitoring activities in the country (Guatemala Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019).

Research Needs
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats.
