Habitat:
It is a peadomorphic species than can be found in aquatic habitats and is restricted to caves. Based on what is known about egg deposition sites in spring salamanders (G. porphyriticus), clutches will be attached as a single mass to the underside of large stones.
Range:
This species is restricted to subterranean aquatic habitats in the Clinch River and Upper Tennessee River drainages in the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province in Roane, Knox, and McMinn Counties, eastern Tennessee, USA (Petranka 1998, Niemiller and Miller 2010, Frost 2021) and its presence is inferred in Loudon, Rhea, and Meigs counties based on the map in Miller and Niemiller (2008) who also report the species at two new sites suggesting that the species may occur slightly more widely than currently mapped. The extent of occurrence (EOO) of the mapped distribution is 4,689 km2, which is thought to contain 2-5 threat-defined locations.
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
It does not appear to overlap within any protected areas in the World Database on Protected Areas (2020).
In an effort to prevent the introduction of Bsal into the US, an Interim Rule of the Lacey Act has been enacted that bans the importation of 201 species of salamanders (USFWS 2016). Additionally, a temporary voluntary trade moratorium of imports of Asian salamander species that are known to carry the disease until such time as effective testing and treatment regimens can be developed and distributed has been recommended to all exporters, shippers, sellers and buyers by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). A North America Bsal Task Force has also been created, with working groups designed to address a variety of disease prevention and mitigation goals (North America Bsal Task Force 2021).
Conservation Actions Needed
This species would benefit from the protection of watersheds that drain into sinkhole systems (Petranka 1998).
Research Needed
Further work is required on the species' population size, distribution, and trends, as well as the impact of suspected threats.
