Habitat:
This species inhabits humid lowland forest and mangrove forest. Salamanders were collected in decaying fronds and associated moist litter near a fallen palm in a coconut palm grove in late March in 1991 (García-París and Wake 2000). The eggs were found inside a pile of coconut rinds at the base of a tree (Terminalia) on the beach at Guayami Settlement. The eggs belonged to two clutches, each containing six embryos; one newly hatched embryo measured 11.8 mm in total length and retained gills (García-París and Wake 2000). The species breeds by direct development.
Range:
This species is only known from the Isla Escudo de Veraguas in the Bocas del Toro Province in Panama. It is found from sea level up to 30 m asl. Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is 3 km2 measured by a minimum convex polygon of its known range and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 4 km2; however ,the EOO has been adjusted to 4 km2 as AOO values should not exceed EOO (IUCN Standards and Petitions Subcommittee 2019).
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
It does not occur in any protected area, although Isla Escudo de Veraguas is an autonomous Ngäbe-Nuglé territory.
Conservation Needed
Some form of official habitat protection is urgently needed. Proactive, precautionary steps should be taken to detect the arrival of Bsal in Colombia and to establish a baseline by including the swabbing of salamanders encountered during routine amphibian monitoring activities in this country.
Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats.
