Habitat:
This species is found under assorted cover objects on the forest floor. Individuals are most active under moist conditions, and tend to burrow underground to avoid extreme cold or dry conditions (Green et al. 2014). It is presumed to breed by direct development.

Range:
This species occurs throughout much of the Chattahoochee National Forest in the Blue Ridge physiographic region of northeastern Georgia and adjacent southwestern North Carolina in Cherokee county (Highton et al. 1989). The extent of occurrence (EOO) of the mapped range is 6,581 km2.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
The range of this species overlaps extensively with Chattahoochee National Forest. Much of its overall distribution falls within National Forest and within State Parks, reserves, and other areas managed for wildlife (NatureServe 2021).

In an effort to prevent the introduction of Bsal into the US, an Interim Rule of the Lacey Act has been enacted that bans the importation of 201 species of salamanders (USFWS 2016). Additionally, a temporary voluntary trade moratorium of imports of Asian salamander species that are known to carry the disease until such time as effective testing and treatment regimens can be developed and distributed has been recommended to all exporters, shippers, sellers and buyers by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). A North America Bsal Task Force has also been created, with working groups designed to address a variety of disease prevention and mitigation goals (North America Bsal Task Force 2021).

Conservation Needed
Continued rigorous management of the existing parks is the best guarantee for the conservation of this species.

Research Needed
Due to this species' small range and reliance on protected areas, population monitoring is recommended.
