Habitat:
The primary habitat of this species is presumably hardwood or mixed forest. Individuals are most commonly found in moist woods and ravines, and use rocks and logs as common cover objects (NatureServe 2021). It is a terrestrial breeder with direct development.
Range:
This species is known only from the type locality in Beavers Bend State Park (BBSP), McCurtain County, Oklahoma at an elevation of 140 m (Highton et al. 1989, Huntington et al. 1993, Sievert and Sievert 2011). A single specimen has been reported from extreme south-western Arkansas (DeQueen Lake, Sevier County) by Trauth et al. (2004) however molecular analysis is needed to confirm the identity of this specimen (Robison and McCallister 2012).
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
The only confirmed occurrence of this species is within Beaver's Bend State Park.
In an effort to prevent the introduction of Bsal into the US, an Interim Rule of the Lacey Act has been enacted that bans the importation of 201 species of salamanders (USFWS 2016). Additionally, a temporary voluntary trade moratorium of imports of Asian salamander species that are known to carry the disease until such time as effective testing and treatment regimens can be developed and distributed has been recommended to all exporters, shippers, sellers and buyers by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). A North America Bsal Task Force has also been created, with working groups designed to address a variety of disease prevention and mitigation goals (North America Bsal Task Force 2021).
Conservation Needed
Continued rigorous management of the park where this species occurs is the best guarantee for continued conservation.
Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats. The taxonomic status of this nominal species warrants further study.
