Range:
This species is found in Wenxian county in southern Gansu, Pingwu and Qingchuan counties in northern Sichuan, Leishan county in eastern Guizhou, and Zhongxian, Yunyang, Fengjie counties of Chongqing Province in China. It occurs at elevations ranging between 650–2,500 m asl. This species was previously thought to possibly occur in Yuexi county in Anhui Province, however, this subpopulation has now been described as Tylotriton anhuiensis according to Qian et al. (2017). The subspecies Tylototriton wenxianensis dabienicus, described by Chen et al. (2010) from the Mount Dabien region of Henan, has been split and elevated to species level by Shen et al. (2012).
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
Most of this species' range is within protected areas.
Conservation Needed
Continued and strengthened management of protected area(s) where this species occurs, and expanded protection of suitable habitat elsewhere in its range is needed. Legislation is needed to address the issue of over-collection, and it also recommended that public outreach and awareness programmes be established to help reduce collection pressure.
Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats. Additionally, research is required to fully resolve the taxonomic status of the species. There is also a need for monitoring the population status of this species given the threats of encroaching agriculture and the associated wetland pollution as well as ongoing development within its range.
