The Order Gymnophiona (also called Apoda) comprises limbless, burrowing amphibians known as caecilians. They are elongated, worm- or snake-like animals with smooth, moist skin and reduced or absent eyes, adapted for a subterranean lifestyle. Caecilians have specialized sensory tentacles for detecting prey underground and are mostly found in tropical regions. Most species are carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, and many exhibit internal fertilization and parental care, with some even giving birth to live young.
