The Family Steatornithidae consists of the oilbird (Steatornis caripensis), a nocturnal, fruit-eating bird found in northern South America. Oilbirds are unique among birds for their echolocation ability, which they use to navigate dark caves where they roost and breed. They feed primarily on fatty fruits of tropical trees, dispersing seeds and playing an important ecological role in forest regeneration. Oilbirds have long wings adapted for sustained flight, large eyes for night vision, and nest in colonies deep within caves, making them one of the few truly nocturnal, cave-dwelling bird species.
