Family Casuariidae |
Family Dromaiidae |
The Order Casuariiformes comprises large, flightless birds such as cassowaries and emus, native to Australia and New Guinea. These birds are characterized by strong, muscular legs adapted for running, small vestigial wings, and in the case of cassowaries, a distinctive helmet-like casque on the head. They are mostly herbivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and plants, but cassowaries can also eat small animals and insects. Casuariiformes are solitary or live in small groups, and some species, like the cassowary, are known for their territorial behavior and defensive strength. As seed dispersers, they play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystems of their native forests and woodlands.
