Habitat:
Tolerant of a wide variety of habitats, it is found in swamps, woodland, forest edge and open country, generally avoiding heavily forested areas (AOU 1983, Howell and Webb 1995). It occurs from sea level to 2,000 m, and rarely as high as 3,000 m (Howell and Webb 1995). The populations in Florida and Central America appear to be partially migratory (del Hoyo et al. 1994).

Range:
This species is widespread throughout south and central America (AOU 1983, Sibley and Monroe 1990, Howell and Webb 1995). It is resident locally in peninsular Florida (U.S.A.), and from Sinaloa and Tamaulipas (Mexico) south through Central America and South America to northern Argentina (Sibley and Monroe 1990).
