Habitat:
Occurs in a variety of habitats, including low elevation grasslands, agricultural areas, wetlands, woodlands, riparian habitats adjacent to open areas, and savanna habitats; prey abundance (small mammals) appears to be the primary predictor of abundance, and so lightly grazed or ungrazed fields are likely the most suitable habitats (Dunk 2020).
Range:
Known to breed in at least the United States of America, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay (Dunk 2020); also known from Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, French Guiana, Nicaragua, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Conservation:
Conservation Actions Underway
CITES Appendix II. CMS Appendix II. California Department of Fish and Game purchased previously grazed grasslands in north California, largely removing impacts of grazing which has seen a consequential increase in prey abundance and wintering numbers of this species.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Standardised surveys are required throughout key sites to clarify regional and global population trends. Research is required to understand threats which may be driving declines.
