Family Podicipedidae |
|
The Order Podicipediformes consists of grebes, which are medium-sized aquatic birds found in freshwater lakes, ponds, and marshes worldwide. Grebes are excellent swimmers and divers, with lobed toes that help propel them underwater, but their legs are set far back on the body, making them awkward on land. They have slender necks, sharp bills, and feed primarily on fish, insects, and small aquatic animals. Grebes are also known for their elaborate courtship displays and for building floating nests anchored to vegetation. Their adaptations make them highly specialized for an aquatic lifestyle.
