Family Spheniscidae |
|
The Order Sphenisciformes comprises penguins, flightless aquatic birds adapted to life in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. Penguins have streamlined bodies and strong flippers for efficient swimming, enabling them to catch fish, squid, and other marine prey. They are covered with dense, waterproof feathers for insulation in cold waters and often exhibit social behaviors such as breeding in large colonies and cooperative chick-rearing. While they cannot fly, their adaptations make them excellent divers and swimmers, playing key roles in marine ecosystems as both predators and prey.
