The family Struthionidae, in the order Struthioniformes, comprises the ostriches, which are the largest living birds. Ostriches are flightless, with long necks and legs adapted for running at high speeds, making them formidable escape artists from predators. They are native to African savannas and open woodlands, where they feed primarily on plants, seeds, and occasionally small animals. Struthionids lay some of the largest eggs of any living bird, and they exhibit social behavior, often forming small groups for foraging and protection. Their powerful legs are also used defensively, capable of delivering strong kicks to deter threats.
