The family Suidae belongs to the order Artiodactyla and includes pigs, hogs, and boars. Members of this family are stout-bodied, omnivorous mammals with a characteristic snout adapted for rooting in soil for food. They are found across Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe, inhabiting forests, grasslands, and savannas. Suids exhibit social behavior, often living in groups called sounders, and have a varied diet that includes roots, tubers, fruits, small animals, and carrion. They are important ecologically as seed dispersers and as prey for large predators, and several species, such as the domestic pig, have been extensively domesticated and introduced worldwide.
