The family Bucerotidae, belonging to the order Bucerotiformes, comprises the hornbills, a distinctive group of birds native mainly to Africa and Asia. Hornbills are recognized for their large, curved bills often topped with a prominent casque, which varies in size and shape among species and plays roles in vocalization, display, and thermoregulation. They are generally medium to large in size and exhibit strong sexual dimorphism in some species. Hornbills are primarily frugivorous, though many also consume insects, small animals, and eggs. They are notable for their unique breeding behavior, in which the female is often sealed inside a tree cavity for incubation while the male provides food. Hornbills occupy diverse habitats, from tropical forests to savannas, and are important seed dispersers, contributing to forest regeneration and ecosystem health.
