The family Cariamidae, commonly known as seriemas, belongs to the order Cariamiformes. These are large, long-legged, ground-dwelling birds native to South America, primarily found in open grasslands and savannas. Seriemas are carnivorous, feeding on insects, small vertebrates, and occasionally seeds, and are known for their unique hunting behavior of striking prey with their strong beaks or kicking it to death. They have striking crests on their heads, long tails, and powerful legs adapted for running rather than sustained flight, although they can fly short distances. Seriemas are also recognized for their loud, far-carrying calls, which are often used to communicate across their territories.
