Habitat:
This bat is present at low to moderate elevations wherever appropriate roost caves are found. It is considered an obligate cave-dwelling species. Like other Mormoopids, it feeds exclusively on insects (Mancina 2005). The species has been taken in association with nine caves on Jamaica (Fincham 1997) and 29 caves in Cuba (Mancina 2005). Nets were placed covering one of the entrances, capturing bats as they entered and exited the cave. The flight of bats began about 7:30 PM. MacLeay 's mustached bat is monoestrus and bears a single young each pregnancy. Breeding begins in March, gravid females occur from March through July, with all females being recorded as pregnant in May. Lactation occurs from June through August with a peak in August (Mancina 2005). Apparently it breeds annually, probably in late winter (Genoways et al. 2005).
Range:
This species is known from the islands of Cuba, and Jamaica, in the Greater Antilles (Simmons 2005).
Conservation:
The species occurs at some protected areas, but direct protection of the caves is more critical for its conservation.
