Habitat:
In Malaysia the species is generally dependent on primary forest (T. Kingston pers. comm. 2006). There are records of two groups roosting in dead leaves on small shrubs in lowland forest in the Philippines (Taylor 1934, Heaney et al. 1998). On Palawan Island, there are records from secondary lowland forest at 80 m asl (Esselstyn et al. 2004).
Recorded at limestone forest areas of ca 500 m asl (Mohd-Azlan et al. 2005) and also reported in swamp and heath forest in Central Kalimantan (Struebig et al. 2006)

Range:
The species occurs on Borneo, Java, Peninsular Malaysia, extremem southern Thailand, Sumatra, and the Philippines. In the Philippines, there are records from Jolo (Taylor 1934), Mindanao (Davao del Norte Province) and Palawan (Heaney et al. 1998). In Sabah this species was recorded in Imbak Canyon, and Telupid.

This species is also reported as a common species in Western and Northeastern Sarawak by Shazali et al. (2018).

Conservation:
The species occurs in a number of protected areas throughout its range.
