Little is known overall about the habitat or ecology of this species (Molur et al. 2002). In China the species was collected at 2,300 m asl in a farmhouse near the forest (Wu, Y. pers. comm.). Recognizing that specimens collected in South and Southeast Asia need to be confirmed as Murina aurata, the species was collected at 2,000 m asl in a agricultural area with forest in Sikkim, India, and it was collected at 1,154 m asl in Nepal (Bates and Harrison 1997). It is believed to be a tree or foliage roosting species (Smith and Xie 2008) and is thought to forage close to ground (Bates and Harrison 1997).
In China, it is currently recorded in Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces (Jiang et al. 2015), while M. eleryi individuals instead of M. aurata were sampled in South China including Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Guizhou (Xu et al. 2014, Yu W. H. pers. comm.). Kruskop (2013) also suggest no occurrence of M. aurata in Vietnam. The records from Myanmar, northern Thailand, Lao PDR, India and Nepal Himalaya also need to be verified.
There are no direct conservation measures in place for this species. Additional studies into the taxonomy, ecology, conservation, and threats over the range of this little known species are needed (Molur et al. 2002).
