The Order Dermoptera comprises a small group of nocturnal, gliding mammals known as colugos or "flying lemurs", though they are not true lemurs. Native to Southeast Asia, colugos are arboreal and have a large patagium—a membrane of skin stretching between their limbs and tail—that allows them to glide long distances between trees. They are herbivorous, feeding primarily on leaves, flowers, and fruit. Dermopterans are slow-moving, highly adapted to life in the forest canopy, and play an important role in their ecosystems by aiding in seed dispersal. They are considered primitive mammals due to certain skeletal and dental features, offering insight into early mammalian evolution.
