The Order Edentata (now more commonly split into Xenarthra, including anteaters, sloths, and armadillos) comprises mammals characterized by reduced or absent teeth, often specialized for diets of insects or leaves. Most edentates have strong claws for digging or climbing and elongated snouts or tongues to capture prey. They are generally slow-moving and inhabit Central and South America, occupying forests, grasslands, and underground burrows. Ecologically, they play important roles as insect controllers, seed dispersers, and soil aerators, contributing to the health of their ecosystems.
