Habitat:
This species is found in montane forests and creeks. It is thought that it may prefer dry forests.

Range:
Rainey's Shrew (Crocidura raineyi) is endemic to Kenya, where it is known from Mt Garguez of Matthews Range (Lenkiyio Hills) and along its creeks (Hutterer 2013). The first eight specimens collected were from Mt Garguez between approximately 1,524 m and 2,134 m asl (Heller 1912). Three records from 2005–2006 also exist from "Orkaila Forest, Matthews Range" recorded at 1,930 m asl (Grant et al. 2020), but it is not known if the species occurs between the two localities of Mt Garguez and Orkaila Forest. Heller (1912) suggested that this species is isolated from other areas further afield, given the unsuitable habitat (low bush covered desert) separating mountain ranges.

Conservation:
This species occurs in Matthews Range Forest Reserve, but grazing during dry season may be a threat. Additional studies are needed into the distribution and natural history of this little known species.
