Habitat:
Crocidura tansaniana is found in submontane rainforest. It occurs in both primary forest and forest where logging has taken place, however the majority of documented findings are within larger fragments of relatively undisturbed montane forest (Stanley et al. 2011). Crocidura tansaniana occurs in sympatry with C. elgonius, C. fuscomurina, C. hildegardeae, C. hirta, C. olivieri, Suncus megalura and Sylvisorex howelli (Stanley et al. 1998). Although both C. tansaniana and C. usambarae have been recorded from the West Usambara Mountains, there are no records of the two-species occurring in sympatry.
Range:
This species has been documented from the East and West Usambara Mountains. In the West Usambara Mountains, it is known only from the Ambangulu Forest above 1,100 m asl elevation (Hutterer 1986, Stanley et al. 2015). Although not yet recorded, it is suspected that it occurs in other forested habitats of the West Usambara Mountains (Stanley et al. 2015).
Conservation:
This species is present in some forest reserves in the Usambaras. Further studies are needed into the threats and natural history of this species.
