Habitat:
This species is common within the Chome Forest Reserve, South Pare Mountains, in montane forests at 2,000 m (Stanley et al. 1996), the only other shrew recorded at this elevation was C. hildegardeae. Crocidura usambarae is less abundant in drier habitats below 1,100 m, making up only 8% of the shrew species recorded in Chome Forest Reserve, which included C.hildegardeae, C.hirta and C.olivieri (Stanley et al. 1996).

Range:
Crocidura usambarae is known from Magamba, Shume and Mazumbai in the Lushoto District, Tanzania, documented between 1,580 and 1,830 m asl (Dippenaar 1980, Howell and Jenkins 1984), as well as from the Chome Forest Reserve of the South Pare Mountains above 1,100 m asl (Stanley et al. 1996).

Conservation:
This species is present in some forest reserves. There is a need to maintain areas of suitable montane forest habitat for this species. Additional studies are needed into the species natural history.
