Habitat:
This species is known from wet, swampy forest near the coast in the type locality (Heim de Balsac and Aellen 1958) and from primary forest (Kadjo et al. 2013).
Range:
Crocidura wimmeri is known from very few records in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. In Côte d'Ivoire, it has been recorded in Parc National de Taï in the west (2001), Foro-Foro Savannah in the centre (1972) (Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University 2024), and the type locality near Adiopodoume and Banco National Park (Kadjo et al. 2013) as recently as 2021 (Laurent 2021), as well as in the nearby Azagny National Park (2009) (Nicolas et al. 2019) in the south. In southwestern Ghana, specimens have been identified via genetic analysis from Ankasa Game Reserve and Draw River Forest Reserve (Nicolas et al. 2019, J. Decher pers. comm. 2024), as well as recently further east in the Atewa Forest (see occurrence records at https://www.gbif.org/species/2435566; Lindsell et al. 2019). Specimens recorded from Cameroon and Gabon refer to Crocidura batesi (Brosset 1988, Hutterer 2005).
Conservation:
The species is currently known from Banco National Park (Kadjo et al. 2013), where a C. wimmeri-focussed awareness and education campaign has targeted local schools in recent years (Laurent 2021). There are no other direct conservation measures in place for this shrew. Research is needed to determine its trends, improve knowledge of its ecology, and also assess the impact of threats.
