Family Macroscelididae |
|
The Order Macroscelidea consists of small, insectivorous mammals commonly known as elephant shrews or sengis, native to Africa. They are characterized by their long, flexible snouts, large eyes, and long hind limbs, which allow for quick, hopping movements. Mostly terrestrial and diurnal, elephant shrews feed on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, using their keen sense of smell and vision to locate prey. They are monogamous or live in small family groups, and construct intricate trail systems in their habitats for foraging and predator escape. Despite their name, they are not true shrews and are considered part of a distinct evolutionary lineage within the superorder Afrotheria.
