Habitat:
This species lives in temperate rain forests, and was recently recorded (via camera traps) in eucaliptus (Eucaliptus globulus) plantations (Vasquez et al. 2023). It occurs at and is tolerant of a broad elevation range from sea level to 1,135 m asl, and is locally abundant. It is mostly terrestrial and nocturnal, foraging on the forest floor for insects, earthworms and other soil-inhabiting invertebrates, along with fungi (Meserve et al. 1988). Patterson et al. (1990) found a high correlation of abundance with bare soil, bryophytes and fallen logs with a diameter larger than 15 cm.

Range:
This species is restricted to south-central Chile, including Chiloé Island, and a single locality from Argentina (Puerto Blest) (Gardner 2008, Martin 2011). The species is known from less than 45 records distributed from -39.99º to -43.35º latitude, and occurs within the Valdivian Temperate Rainforest ecoregion (sensu Olson et al. 2001).

Conservation:
This species occurs in several protected areas. More research is necessary to determine the area of occupancy and impact of numerous threats within the species' range.
