Habitat:
This species inhabits sandy soils in desert flats with creosote bush or other desert shrubs, as well as riparian forests along dry gullies and constructs deep burrow systems more than 25 cm underneath the ground surface which maintain moderate temperatures even when the outside temperature reaches extremes (Bidau 2015).

Range:
This species occurs in northern Chile above 2,700 m (Bidau 2015); this part of the range is within the range of C. opimus. Its range goes as far as 29o south in Chile (Bidau and Lessa pers. comm.). C.f. fulvus occurs in western Antofagasta, Chile, and subspecies C.f. robustus is restricted to the Oasis de Pica in the desert of Tarapacá, Chile. The ranges of the two subspecies are separated by four degrees of latitude (Bidau 2015).

Conservation:
There is no information available about any conservation measures being made to protect this species. Further research is necessary to clarify the true status of this species.
