Habitat:
This rodent is found in brush, tropical scrub forests; most of these forests that still exist are found on mountains (Lee et al. 2006). It is found in forested regions and second growth forest (Gilbert 2016). Its biology has not been reported, but is probably similar to that of D. punctata (Reid 1997). They feed on a variety of plants include almonds (Terminalia), coconuts (Cocos nucifera), hibiscus flowers, and Pentaclethra pods.
Range:
This species is presumably endemic to Roatán Island, Honduras (Gilbert 2016). There are peccary populations on several other nearby islands that are thought to be transplants, however, it is not known which species they represent (Emmons pers. comm.).
Conservation:
This species occurs within two protected areas (J. Schipper pers. comm.). Further taxonomic research is needed.
